Description No child can escape from the experience of fear, loss, grief, and trauma and the associated feelings. As Mr. Rogers said, “When we can talk about our feelings, they can become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people that we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” What a privilege to be the adult a child can trust with that important talk! Major events that impact a child's life can include going to the doctor, starting preschool or kindergarten, grieving the death of someone special, having a family member diagnosed with a “scary” illness, or understanding a friend with Autism or a special need.
Objective At the 2018 ELC Omaha Region Early Literacy Conference, adults working with children ages 2-8 will see how literacy experiences (books, songs, poems, etc.) can help provide support, reassurance and understanding during challenging times. Using the ideas and strategies presented at the conference, adults will build their confidence in helping children make sense of their world.
